Sanagasta Symbolism |

Files and information associated with Sanagasta’s cultural, ceremonial, and official symbols.

Despite having more than 4 centuries of history, Sanagasta did not possess insignias or ceremonial symbols that represented it. For this reason, in 2024 the contest “A Flag for Sanagasta” was held. The competition invited local residents to present their flag proposals, which were evaluated by a jury of seven members with expertise in history, design, culture, music, traditions, geography, and popular knowledge of the department.

The contest was held anonymously, and each proposal had to go through several elimination rounds, ultimately leaving a single winner. However, in the final round it was concluded that a “superior result” could be achieved by merging the concepts presented in the last two proposals.

With the consent of the finalists and the participation of the jury, the official departmental insignia was created.

 Meaning of the Colors

  • Sky Blue: Together with the sky, it represents the infinity of the heavens covering the valleys.
  • Yellow: The light that shines year-round over the mountains, fields, and valleys.
  • Brown: A typical and abundant color in nature, where people carry out their most productive activities: agriculture and livestock farming.
  • Green: Human intervention in nature, converging in the valleys to enhance life.
  • Red: The region’s historic soils, reflected in indigenous pottery and the legacy of the Federalist struggle.

 Meaning of the shapes

  • Mountains: A symbol of greatness, strength, and protection that geography grants its people, shaping their way of life.
  • Diagonal Stripe: Human intervention in nature, converging in the valleys to enhance life; an element that stands out from the arid surroundings through vibrant, intense shades of green.
  • Clear Sky: Ideas of freedom and grandeur. It is depicted cloudless, as it often appears most of the time.
  • Sun: Venerated by indigenous ancestors. Its stylized rays follow geometric patterns typical of the crafts made by those peoples.
  • Flag as a Whole: It portrays a typical Sanagasta sunrise, symbolizing the start of daily tasks and the opportunity of one more day of life.
